Bio:
I received a BA degree from Hunter College, N.YC and postgraduate work at the New School. NYC. I studied with Dong Kingman, Robert Motherwell, Gregorio Prestopino and Richard Pousette Dart. Chaim Gross was a juror when I received a First Prize Painting award, which included a one-year scholarship at the New School. I continued painting earning awards and exhibiting in galleries but took up sculpture, carving wood and stone, When I learned to weld. I found that steel was the medium in which I could best express myself. By manipulation of simple geometric shapes, patterning curves, angles and lines that interact with the space surrounding them, I created large colorful garden sculptures as well as smaller sculptures in aluminum, bronze, and stainless steel, which have been collected by. Corporations, Museums and Synagogues in N.J and NY. I have exhibited Nationally and Internationally I am a recipient of many sculpture awards including a Medal of Honor and a Fellowship in Sculpture. My listings are included in many reference books. I have served as President, Sculpture Chair, Jury chair, and as a member of the Advisory boards of many Professional art organizations Artist Statement:
As an artist and as a woman, I react to what is around me. Nature, art, architecture, music, history and current events motivate me to create my metal sculptures. I transform rigid raw materials by manipulation of simple geometric shapes, patterning curves, angles and lines that interact with the space surrounding them. Like a choreographer, I connect these parts into a fluid whole that exhibits movement, energy, symmetry and balance. I invite each viewer to explore my spaces from many perspectives and to connect their experiences of the world with my own.Music is a part of my life. I grew up loving music, playing piano and violin, listening to classical music and later on studying guitar. Radio station WQXR, tapes or CDs are always on in my home, studio and car. When I work at my sculpture in steel, aluminum or bronze, it is always with music playing in the background. The rhythms and ideas of the musical compositions influence my abstract work, as I express emotions and ideas in the sculpture that I create. Each sculpture is a unique piece individually constructed. Those that are miniature in scale are sculptures as well as maquettes for larger sculptures. Themes of creation, nature and biblical stories, as well as heroism, humor and the holocaust are recurrent in my artworks.
